Permeation selectivity in the electro-dialysis of mono- and divalent cations using supported liquid membranes

We investigated in detail the permeation selectivity electro-dialysis of Na+, K+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ both binary quaternary mixtures using a supported liquid membrane (SLM). The SLM consisted organic 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) containing lipophilic anion, i.e. tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate, as cation-exchanging site, which was used to fill pores supporting AccurelR. first determined electro-phoretic mobilities migrating cations single salt solutions, yielding: Na+ > K+ Ca2+. This order reflects different size cations. monovalent migrate dehydrated state divalent (partly) hydrated state, conclusion by Karl Fisher titrations. Both experiments showed following order: Mg2+. Since this does not correlate with mobilities, we have ion-exchange constant (Kex) found: ≈ Na+. conclude that overall is combination mobility present membrane.
